A basic yet essential recipe for making perfectly fluffy white rice every time. Ideal for accompanying a variety of dishes or enjoyed on its own as a comforting staple.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup white rice
- 2 cups water
Directions:
- Rinse the rice: Place the rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming too sticky.
- Combine rice and water: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Make sure the rice is evenly distributed in the pot.
- Bring to a boil: Place the saucepan over high heat and bring the water to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer: Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Allow the rice to simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender.
- Fluff the rice: Once the rice is cooked, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Then, uncover the pot and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains.
- Serve: Serve the fluffy white rice as a side dish with your favorite main courses or enjoy it on its own.
Note: For variations, you can add a pinch of salt or a tablespoon of butter to the water before cooking the rice for added flavor. You can also substitute chicken or vegetable broth for water for a richer taste.
