This Chinese Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe combines tender chicken with a tangy and sweet sauce, creating a delightful dish that’s perfect for any occasion. Serve it with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.

  • 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 green bell pepper, cut into chunks
  • 1 red bell pepper, cut into chunks
  • 1 onion, cut into chunks
  • Pineapple chunks (optional, for added sweetness)

For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger
  • 1/4 cup water

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together all the ingredients for the sweet and sour sauce until well combined. Set aside.
  2. Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl and toss with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the coated chicken pieces and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed, then add the bell peppers and onion. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened.
  5. If using pineapple chunks, add them to the skillet along with the bell peppers and onion.
  6. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet with the vegetables.
  7. Give the sweet and sour sauce a quick stir to recombine, then pour it over the chicken and vegetables in the skillet.
  8. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce has thickened and coats the chicken and vegetables evenly, about 2-3 minutes.
  9. Serve the Chinese Sweet and Sour Chicken hot with steamed rice or noodles.
