Steak and Onion Dumplings Braised in a Slow Cooker Recipe

This recipe creates a comforting and flavorful dish of tender steak and caramelized onions nestled beneath fluffy dumplings, all braised to perfection in a slow cooker.

  • For the Steak and Onions:
    • 1 pound beef chuck roast, cut into 1-inch cubes
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 1 cup beef broth
    • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • For the Dumplings:
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 3 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
    • 1/2 cup milk

  1. Brown the Steak (Optional): Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the beef cubes with salt and pepper. Sear the steak in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, until browned. Transfer the browned steak to a slow cooker.
  2. Sauté the Onions and Garlic (Optional): If you didn’t brown the steak, use the same skillet to saute the onions and garlic with a tablespoon of olive oil for 5 minutes, until softened. Add them to the slow cooker with the browned steak.
  3. Combine Slow Cooker Ingredients: Add the dried thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, beef broth, red wine (if using), and soy sauce to the slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine.
  4. Slow Cooker Cook Time: Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 7-8 hours, or on HIGH for 4-5 hours, until the steak is very tender and falling apart.
  5. Make the Dumplings (While Steak Cooks): In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk until a soft dough forms.
  6. Form and Add Dumplings: With floured hands, gently knead the dough a few times. Drop tablespoons of dough onto the slow cooker surface, leaving space between them.
  7. Cook Dumplings: Cook for an additional 30-45 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through and fluffy. The internal temperature of the dumplings should reach 160°F (71°C).
  8. Serve: Serve the braised steak and onions with the dumplings spooned on top. Enjoy!
