This recipe provides a simple and delicious way to prepare Swiss steak using a slow cooker. Tenderized beef, flavorful vegetables, and a savory sauce come together to create a comforting meal perfect for any day of the week.
Ingredients:
- 1.5 pounds round steak, cut into serving-size pieces
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 stalks celery, sliced
- 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
Directions:
- Season the round steak pieces with salt, pepper, and paprika on both sides.
- Place the sliced onions, minced garlic, carrots, and celery in the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Lay the seasoned steak pieces on top of the vegetables in a single layer.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the diced tomatoes (with their juices), beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and dried thyme. Pour this mixture over the steak and vegetables in the slow cooker.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours or on high heat for 3-4 hours, or until the steak is tender.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, about 30 minutes before the cooking time is complete, mix 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour with 2 tablespoons of water to make a slurry. Stir the slurry into the slow cooker contents and continue cooking until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Once the steak is tender and cooked to your liking, serve hot, spooning the vegetables and sauce over the steak pieces.
- Optionally, garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.
Enjoy your delicious slow cooker Swiss steak with your favorite side dishes!
