Scalloped Potatoes are a classic comfort food side dish featuring thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce until tender and golden. This recipe is perfect for holidays, family gatherings, or any meal that calls for a hearty and satisfying accompaniment.

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic mixture, stirring constantly for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, ensuring a smooth mixture.
    • Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens (about 5-7 minutes).
    • Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  3. Assemble the Dish:
    • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, overlapping slightly.
    • Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
    • Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  4. Add Cheese Topping:
    • Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  5. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30-35 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • Let the scalloped potatoes rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
    • Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired.
