Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

This Salisbury steak recipe features tender, juicy patties smothered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy. Perfect for a comforting dinner, this dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salisbury Steaks:
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval patty.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Prepare the Mushroom Gravy:
  6. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until they begin to soften, about 5 minutes.
  7. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 3 minutes.
  8. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until the flour is lightly golden.
  9. Gradually whisk in beef broth and milk, stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken.
  10. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  11. Combine and Serve:
  12. Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top.
  13. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-10 minutes, or until the patties are heated through and the gravy has thickened.
  14. Serve the Salisbury steaks with mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes or rice, and enjoy!
