Homemade Churros Recipe

These golden-fried pastries are a delightful treat, perfect for dipping in hot chocolate or a decadent dulce de leche sauce.

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 ½ tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 quarts oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
  • ½ cup white sugar, for coating
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  1. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, and vegetable oil. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Remove from heat and immediately add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until a dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
  3. Transfer the dough to a mixing bowl and let cool slightly, for about 5 minutes.
  4. While the dough cools, prepare your cinnamon sugar coating by mixing the ½ cup of sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish.
  5. Once cool enough to handle, transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. If you don’t have a piping bag, you can transfer the dough to a zip-lock bag and snip off a small corner.
  6. Heat the frying oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
  7. Pipe 3-4 inch churro strips directly into the hot oil, using scissors to cut the dough as it comes out of the piping bag (or snip off small pieces of dough from the corner of the zip-lock bag).
  8. Fry the churros for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  9. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the churros to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  10. While still hot, immediately roll the churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.
  11. Serve warm and enjoy!
