Decadent Chocolate Layer Cake Recipe

This recipe is a chocolate lover’s dream! Rich, moist cake layers are sandwiched between a decadent chocolate frosting and finished with a luxurious ganache drizzle.

Ingredients:

Cake Layers

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Eggs
  • Milk (Buttermilk or whole milk)
  • Oil (Vegetable or canola oil)
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Hot Coffee (Brewed)

Chocolate Frosting

  • Butter (Softened)
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Milk (Optional)
  • Vanilla Extract

Chocolate Ganache (Optional)

  • Heavy Cream
  • Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips or chopped chocolate

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven and prepare your cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk (or buttermilk) to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in the hot coffee. The batter will be thin, but that’s okay!
  6. Divide the batter evenly between your prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool completely before frosting.
  8. To make the frosting, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the cocoa powder and vanilla extract. If the frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
  9. Once the cakes are cool, frost them generously in between the layers and all over the outside.
  10. To make the ganache (optional), heat the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until simmering. Remove from heat and pour over chopped chocolate. Let it sit for a few minutes, then whisk until smooth and glossy. Let the ganache cool slightly before drizzling over the top of the frosted cake.
  11. Enjoy your decadent chocolate cake!
