Creamy Vanilla Dessert Recipe

This recipe creates a smooth and delightful vanilla dessert that’s perfect for any occasion.


  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 large egg yolks, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional toppings: Fresh berries, whipped cream, chopped nuts, chocolate shavings


  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, cream, sugar, and cornstarch. Heat the mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly, until it begins to simmer and thicken.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks. Slowly whisk a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks to temper them. Then, slowly whisk the tempered egg yolks back into the hot milk mixture in the saucepan.
  3. Continue whisking and cooking the mixture over medium heat for 1-2 minutes, or until it thickens significantly and coats the back of a spoon.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and whisk in the butter, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and combined.
  5. Pour the vanilla pudding into individual serving dishes or ramekins. Cover the surface of each dish with plastic wrap directly touching the pudding to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until completely chilled.
  6. Serve the chilled vanilla pudding plain or topped with your favorite garnishes like fresh berries, whipped cream, chopped nuts, or chocolate shavings.
